What Is METROPORT Teen Court?

METROPORT Teen Court is a voluntary program which allows juvenile Class C misdemeanor offenders to “pay” for their citation through community service and involvement in the judicial process.

These cases are presented by volunteer teen court attorneys to a jury of the defendant’s peers made up of volunteers from local secondary schools and returning youth who were previously defendants. The jury members then assess a sentence of community service hours following the guidelines of the discipline grid found in this brochure. Teen Court is a “hands on” educational opportunity which allows teen offenders and teen volunteers to better understand our system of justice.

Evidence from METROPORT Teen Court and other teen courts in the state of Texas indicates that young people do stay out of trouble following a teen court appearance, and the community service the defendants perform saves the local community thousands of dollars each year. We hope to interrupt developing patterns of criminal behavior by promoting feelings of high self-esteem, motivation for self-improvement, personal responsibility for the choices teens make, and development of healthy attitudes toward authority. Participation in the teen court program will educate a youth in life’s responsibilities as an individual, family member, and productive citizen.
