 Media release:

CRIME IN COLLEYVILLE DROPS TO 21-YEAR LOW

In Colleyville’s last citizen survey, conducted in 2012, 100% of the respondents noted that having a safe community was important to their quality of life. According to the latest Uniform Crime Report (UCR), they’ve got it. The crime rate in Colleyville has dropped to a 21-year low.

“We’ve developed a program that is progressive, proactive, and collaborative—and that works for our community,” said Police Chief Michael Holder.  “The role our community partners and citizens play in our efforts to keep the city safe cannot be underestimated.”

According to the report, overall Part I crime fell by 8% from 2011. Burglaries dropped by 24%; thefts by 8%; violent crimes, including robbery and aggravated assault, by 44%; and, property crime decreased by 6%. In fact, the city’s three-year crime trend analysis shows a 39% decrease in these offenses since 2010. Part I offenses, including murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, auto theft, and arson are reported through the UCR for crime analysis both locally and statewide.

Community policing, through which patrol officers are assigned specific areas and develop working relationships with residents and business owners in those neighborhoods, had a significant impact on the lower crime rate—allowing officers to better know the neighborhoods and businesses they serve, and resulting in a proactive rather than reactive approach to crime. The department also uses mapping software to provide a visual assessment of any trending trouble spots. And officials give substantial credit to a vigilant public, active neighborhood crime watch groups, and citizens taking greater care to lock cars, close garage doors, and keep valuables out of sight.
