Colleyville, Texas… The fall youth sports season has begun and that means thousands of kids and families are hitting soccer, baseball and softball fields across the D/FW area. Lightning, hail and flash floods can all be part of North Texas’ weather scene. The start of kids’ baseball, softball and soccer season means more families outdoors for extended periods—and more vulnerability to bad weather In Colleyville, where youth sports dominate the city’s weekend landscape, city officials want to ensure the pint-sized players stay safe. To do that, they’re taking their message to the fields—during Saturday’s softball games at Colleyville’s City Park. The interactive demonstration on storm safety, including lightning safety, is scheduled Saturday, Oct. 8 at 10:30 a.m. The city also will unveil its new early warning system. “Some of these storms come up with very little warning so we want to make certain that kids know what to do if a storm strikes suddenly. We’re providing child-appropriate information and getting the kids accustomed to the sirens so they’ll be better equipped to respond well,” states Colleyville Mayor David Kelly. The city recently invested $140,000 in eight warning sirens that have been installed across the city, including the athletic fields at Heritage High School, City Park, and Pleasant Run Park—the city’s soccer complex. Sirens near the athletic fields also will feature voice warning capabilities. City Park is located at 5109 Bransford Road in Colleyville.
