City puts school zone speeders to the test
Colleyville, Texas…Drivers violating the posted speed limit in Colleyville school zones may soon get a lesson in public safety. The city has installed 10 speed monitoring signs at the city’s elementary schools to warn drivers who exceed the speed limit during posted school zone hours.

“Drivers who exceed the speed limit in school zones pose a real threat to our school children—especially at the elementary school level. The speed monitors will warn drivers of excessive speeds and raise awareness that they’re driving in a school zone. We believe the monitors will act as a visual deterrent to unsafe drivers,” remarked Police Chief Tommy Ingram.

During the summer break, the city installed monitors at elementary schools on its busiest streets and intersections. Monitors are located at Bransford, O.C. Taylor, Liberty, Heritage, and Covenant Christian Academy elementary schools. During posted school zone hours, flashing red displays will alert drivers of excessive speed. The Colleyville Police Department will continue radar enforcement of school zone, where fines for speeding start at $174.

Transportation officials with the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD welcome the speed zone monitoring signs. Speeding in school zones is second only to stopping for school buses in the danger posed to school children.

Signs at Liberty Elementary School, part of the Keller school district, will be in operation starting Aug. 9  when Keller children return to school. In the GCISD, the signs will begin operating Aug. 15 with the start of the school year.
