Colleyville first responders to benefit from wireless "blanket"

Colleyville, Texas…The city of Colleyville, in partnership with Meshlinx Wireless, has installed a wireless mesh, multi-radio networking system to connect first responders and city services. A first in Texas, the multi-radio system provides high speed access in excess of 54Mb/sec in the network path to the fibre optics backbone. Information from police and fire personnel can “jump” from one wireless connection, or node, to the next—eliminating the need for hardwiring.

The system is being provided by MeshLinx, Inc., a wireless solutions company. In addition to adding efficiency and expediency to the city’s first responders, the system allows wireless connections between the city of Colleyville’s mainframe servers and outlying offices, including fire stations and the public works service center. Wireless connections will reduce the city’s need to hardwire those locations, resulting in an estimated cost savings of $300,000.

The multi-radio system will be tested during its initial six-month pilot program to ensure its efficiency and speed over standard mesh systems. The MeshLinx solution incorporates mesh technology using WiFi (802.11 IEEE standards). The network is interoperable with other WiFi 802.11 equipment. The company plans to demonstrate the systems ability to 1) serve as a backbone for two fire stations and the public works service center; 2) provide a limited wireless “blanket” for first responders, allowing high-speed access to the city network from their vehicle within the coverage area; 3) demonstrate potential for VolP roaming into and out of the MeshLinx coverage area.

Once the six-month testing period is complete, the city will further study the possibility of expanding the system to allow police to transmit reports directly from the field, which would free officers to allot more time for patrols. Video surveillance with wireless cameras also may be considered. If so, first responders could remotely monitor a location from within a vehicle or from the 9-1-1 dispatch center.

What is multi-radio? MeshLinx uses three or more transceivers to deliver content. One is dedicated to up linking information; the second is dedicated to down linking information, while the third is dedicated to subscribers only.
