COLLEYVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY LAUNCHES
24/7 DOWNLOAD PROGRAM

Colleyville
, TexasThe Colleyville Public Library now offers Internet access to downloadable audio books, music, e-Books, and videos.  The library is the first in Tarrant County, and one of only two in North Texas, to offer downloadable materials in all four mediums. The combination of state-of-the-art technology and the latest in video and book titles is quickly making the Colleyville Public Library the source of choice for research, education, and entertainment materials. Library patrons need a library card to access the service. Demonstrations of the new download service will be conducted Monday, Aug. 7, from 1:00-3:00 p.m.

“The move to digital audio, video and books reaffirms the fact that libraries continue to be one of the best resources for information and entertainment,” stated Mary Rodne, library director for the city of Colleyville. “This service is one more step in an ongoing evolution to meet the needs of a sophisticated patron base.”

The library plans to make a limited number of MP3 devices available for checkout as an adjunct to the download service. With the beginning of the new school year, Colleyville’s new service can provide instant access to valuable resource materials for students.

The download service was developed by OverDrive, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio, which is expanding its digital media catalog of more than 100,000 e-Books, audio books, and music CDs with OverDrive Video, digital versions of feature films, movie classics, concerts, educational materials and television shows. With OverDrive Video a user downloads a movie to a Windows-based PC. Titles are copy protected using Microsoft Windows Media Rights Manager, which restricts file sharing and reclaims the rights to view the movie after the lending period has expired. A user does not need to return the video as it automatically resets itself in the library catalog when due.

With materials automatically returned to the system once the loan period is over, costs for overdue materials, loss, and shelving of materials is minimized. Some of the materials will have a burn-to-CD feature, which will allow library patrons to keep the material.

The city has contracted for the service for one year with plans to renew on an annual basis, depending on the receptiveness of patrons and use of the program.
