| Rain and Freeze Sensors FAQ |
|
In July 2006, the Colleyville City Council passed a water conservation ordinance (06-1579). As of August 1, 2006, all new irrigation systems are required to have rain and freeze sensors installed. All existing systems must comply by August 1, 2008. According to the water conservation ordinance, failure to comply with the rain/freeze sensor requirements may result in the termination of water service until the required sensors are installed. Q: What is a rain/freeze sensor? A: Rain and freeze sensors prevent automatic irrigation systems from operating when sufficient rain has fallen to trip the sensor or when temperatures are below freezing. Q: Why do we need the sensors? A: Rain and freeze sensors conserve water by preventing automatic irrigation systems from running during wet periods. Homeowners may benefit from a savings on monthly water utility bills. Sensors also prevent systems from running when temperatures are below freezing, reducing the incidence of ice on sidewalks and roadways. Q: When do these sensors have to be installed? A: Sensors currently are required on all new systems installed after August 1, 2006. Existing systems have until August 2008 to have sensors installed. Q: What is the cost for the sensors? A: On average, cost for the sensors runs between $40 and $125, plus installation. Q: Where can I purchase a rain and freeze sensor? A: Sensors may be purchased at Lowes, Home Depot, or any irrigation supply company. In Colleyville, Horizon Irrigation Supply, located in Colleyville at 6707 Colleyville Blvd. (phone: 817.488.3265) carries them. Landscape maintenance companies can also install the sensors. Q: What are the different types of sensors? A: Sensors are hard wired or wireless to provide a range of installation options. Q: Will the city install the sensor for me? A: The city does not install these sensors. Q: Do I need to contact the city once the sensors have been installed? A: It is recommended to avoid any confusion. Once installation is complete, residents are encouraged to contact the Public Works Department at 817.540.0609 or send an email to . Be sure to include the name and address of the installation location and the date installation was completed. |
