Colleyville to Host Softball State Championship

Colleyville, Texas… For the first time in nearly a decade, tiny but tough young women will descend on Colleyville to compete in the annual Texas Amateur Athletic Federation’s (TAAF) Girls 14 and under Class A fast-pitch softball tournament this weekend.

Ten teams will travel from across the state to claw their way to the championship title. Games will begin at 8 a.m., Saturday, July 12, on the softball fields at 5205 Bransford Rd.  Local teams from Mesquite, Rockwall, Grapevine and Dallas are also scheduled to compete.

The last time Colleyville hosted the state championship was in 2001 setting a TAAF participation record of 27 teams. This year, players will enjoy $60,000 worth of renovations to the fields including added safety measures and a sleeker design, tournament director Luke DeFilippis said.

“These girls are talented and ready to win,” he said. “Colleyville is proud to be hosting such a prestigious tournament.”

The Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) is a non-profit organization established in 1925 to promote, organize and conduct amateur athletics in the state of Texas. Today, the organization’s primary membership is made up of more than 150 parks and recreation facilities, and every year its leaders arrange state championships in 13 sports.

TAAF began organizing women’s fast-pitch softball events 15 years ago and participation, especially in girls’ sports, has steadily increased over the years.
