Colleyville PD Launches “Stop Thief” Program |
|
Colleyville police are enlisting residents to send a message to criminals that the city is “not open for business.” The department has initiated the “Stop Thief” program to deter car burglaries. The new program, which begins this week, works as both a crime deterrent and a public education program. It is the first of its kind in Texas. “Vehicle burglaries are crimes of opportunity. If citizens can send a message to thieves that the opportunity isn’t present, those thieves will likely move on to another target,” stated Colleyville Police Chief Tommy Ingram. “The program also serves to educate and remind the public to remove valuables from their cars, which is a critical concern in stopping this particular crime.” The “Stop Thief” program is simple, consisting of a printed placard that is placed on the car’s rearview mirror each time it is parked. The placard serves as a notice to potential thieves that there are no valuables in the car; it also serves as a reminder to vehicle owners to remove any valuables, including bags, purses, briefcases, money, laptops, radar detectors, etc. The placards are free and can be obtained at the Colleyville Justice Center, 5201 Riverwalk Drive , in Colleyville. The crime rate in Colleyville is one of the lowest in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and the lowest in Northeast Tarrant County. Vehicle burglaries are one of the most common calls received by the Colleyville Police Department.

Colleyville, Texas…Players and spectators at Colleyville soccer and baseball fields have long known that the city’s playing fields are second to none. Now the city’s Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) is receiving recognition for those fields at state and national levels. The department recently was awarded the Texas Turfgrass Association’s (TTA) Baseball Field of the Year award for the fields at City Park and the Sports Turf Managers Association’s (STMA) Soccer Field of the Year award for the city’s Pleasant Run soccer fields. “It takes only one visit to City Park or Pleasant Run Park during the baseball and soccer seasons to understand that these parks and their outstanding sports fields play a significant role in the lifestyles of families in Colleyville and the surrounding area.” remarked Mayor David Kelly. “Our Parks staff set the professional bar extremely high when they set out to achieve these awards. It’s tremendously gratifying to see their hard work in developing and maintaining our sports fields recognized with these prestigious awards.” The TTA and STMA are the most influential professional organizations in the sports turf management arenas. Competition for the coveted awards was intense, as Colleyville’s Parks and Recreation Department outmatched competitors across the state and nationally to win the respective awards. In January, the Colleyville PARD opened Phase I of McPherson Park in the city’s northwest quadrant, culminating two years of design and construction work on the project. In 2007, the department introduced the first Evos™ play structure, a revolutionary design in children’s playscapes, at Sparger Park. It was the first of its kind in Texas, and one of only five in the nation. The city’s second Evos™ playscape was unveiled at McPherson Park last month. City’s latest park honors Colleyville’s past, present, and future
Colleyville, Texas…The city of Colleyville will celebrate the arrival of a new city recreation facility with the grand opening of McPherson Park on Saturday, Jan. 26. Activities kick off at 10 a.m. at the park, located at 240 McDonwell School Road. The opening of the new park, which combines elements of Colleyville history with a contemporary pavilion and state-of-the-art play structure, will feature a petting zoo, pony rides, cow-chip-throwing contest, milk-bottle game, sack races, and a log-barn-building game. The Southwest Dairy museum will be on hand with a mobile dairy unit for milking demonstrations. The first 50 families to arrive at the grand opening event will receive a special commemorative memento. McPherson Park occupies land that formerly housed one of the major dairy farms in Colleyville. In addition to the pavilion, which features picnic areas and restroom facilities, the new park boasts ample parking, basketball and sand volleyball courts, open play areas, and an Evos™ play structure. Additional amenities include hike and bike trails, and a backstop. The Evos™ play structure offers a complete playground experience based on physics, geometry, and human physiology. This is Colleyville’s second Evos™ system; the first was introduced last year at Sparger Park. At the time, it was the first of its kind in Texas, and one of only five in the nation. The former Dunn/Tirk log barn is a prominent feature at McPherson Park. Originally built in the late 1800s, the barn is one of the few existing log structures remaining in Tarrant County. Its renovation and preservation lets visitors peek into the past by simply raising the shuttered openings on either of the barn’s two primary pens. The city plans more improvements to McPherson Park, including renovation of several existing structures on the site, a group pavilion area, tree farm, and park service center improvements. Phase II of the 27-acre park is currently in the design stage. For additional information, please contact Parks and Recreation Director Monica Walsh at 817.503.1180.
